Medium-length animation film in development, chivalrous fantasy tale for children, written and directed by Mila Monaghan
Ida is a young groom who leads a quiet and modest life alongside her parents and sister Lia. One day, Lia is chosen by the King of Malaspina, future ruler, to become his wife. She is taken away from her family and taken to the castle. Lia’s parents, powerless, bow to the will of their sovereign but Ida, totally revolted by the situation, refuses to let it happen. The next day, she goes on an adventure to try to free her sister. But the road is long and perilous, many creatures inhabit the woods surrounding the castle. On the way, Ida will discover that the only true scourge is the one who exhausts the kingdom’s resources, enslaves the people and gradually shapes the world according to its interests.
Malaspina is an ecological and feminist adventure fable that addresses these themes through the prism of wonder.
The film blends fairy tales and chivalrous novels to encourage a family audience to question the dominance humans have over the living. It puts at the heart of the story the importance of mutual aid and solidarity in the battles we are fighting.
